Joey Votto, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player, has agreed to a $38 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds. The deal, which is over three seasons, allows the two sides to avoid arbitration. The 27-year-old was the main reason why the Reds made it to the 2010 baseball playoffs.
Votto hit .324 with 37 homers, 113 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. He also had an on-base percentage of .424 and an OPS of 1.024.
The Reds have a young, talented roster but Votto was the piece the team is built around. Locking him up makes a lot of sense for Cincinnati. For Votto, getting money now instead of dealing with arbitration makes life easier for him, as well.
In 2010, Votto made only $525,000, making him one of baseball’s best bargains.
