Nikolai Zherdev has been dropped by the New York Rangers after they chose to walk away from his salary arbitration. Zherdev is now an unrestricted free agent.
I’m not surprised at all. The Rangers picked up Ales Kotalik, Marian Gaborik and Donald Brashear at the free agent deadline so they clearly didn’t see a need to keep Zherdev
if they had to spend more money. He was asking for $4.75, he was offered less than $3.2 but was awarded (after arbitration) $3.9 million.
Rangers GM/president Glen Sather said: “with the additions we’ve been able to make this summer, we feel we’ve been able to add scoring and offense from the wing position. Following the arbitration process and subsequent award given, we feel it is in our best interest to walk away and continue to explore all available options to improve our roster.”
The 24-year-old was drafted fourth overall in 2003 by the Columbus Blue Jackets and played 82 games with the Rangers last season. He posted 23 goals and 35 assists but was scoreless in the seven playoff games.
