Phillies Trade for Hunter Pence

According to multiple reports, the Philadelphia Phillies are trading for Hunter Pence. While the deal isn’t official, it is expected to be officially announced soon. In return, the Houston Astros are said to be receiving four minor league prospects.

The 28-year-old outfielder is having a very good year for the Astros. He’s hitting .308 with 11 homers, 62 RBIs, 26 doubles and 49 runs. Hunter Pence is also a good fielder and supposedly a positive influence in the clubhouse.

Why would the Astros trade Hunter Pence? They needed to reload their farm system. They weren’t going to be good anytime soon and since they didn’t view Hunter Pence as a franchise piece, they needed to rebuild using all available assets.

As for the Phillies, this is a good move. They have a World Series quality group of starting pitchers, however their lineup is deceptively weak. They have a bunch of low batting average players and though they are explosive, they can also be shut down. Hunter Pence should help.
