The Indiana Pacers are taking their sweet time to decide what to do with Larry Bird. Bird, who is currently the president of the Pacers, is waiting to hear from owner Herb Simon regarding whether or not he will be given a new contract. My question: What is taking so long? Bird has done a great job and deserves to continue leading the Pacers organization.
Rebuilding is a very difficult thing to do in the NBA. Bird has been able to turn things around relatively quickly for the Pacers. He has assembled a quality group of young players and has now positioned the franchise to open up salary cap room to bring in a big time free agent or two.
Bird also did a good job of finding an up and coming coach in Frank Vogel. With Vogel in charge, the Pacers made the 2011 NBA Playoffs and gave great effort in their first round matchup against the top seeded Chicago Bulls.
Said Vogel: “He’s not ‘Larry Legend’ because of his physical abilities to play basketball. He’s got a great basketball mind and he’s the one that should be making the decisions.”
Agreed. Get it done, Herb Simon.
