~~~ Tidbits of stuff while I am Live Blogging (latest on top) ~~~
I hope you’ve enjoyed my little Tidbits ..
* that’s it for this section as we watch the final FIN/NZL on TSN now..
Off-Topic: Ladies Ice Hockey
* I wrote earlier about the “Winnipeg” representation and Jennifer Botterhill. Well, there was a story on our local stations and they showed an interview with her and her folks. Did you know that besides her own history and accomplishments … that Her mother Doreen represented Canada in speed skating at the 1964 and 1968 Winter Olympics. Her brother Jason won three gold medals, more than any other player, representing Canada at the world junior hockey championships. Her father Cal is a renowned sports psychologist at the University of Winnipeg. Jennifer Botterill was named Manitoba’s female athlete of the year for 2001, an award her mother won 40 years ago.
Hmmmm after 7
* Norway seems to be giving Sweden a run for the money! Anybody watching?
Speaking of Days Off ..
* Team Canada women’s “Team Kleibrink” is also off today after their duo games yesterday. Coach Daryl Nixon is posting a diary on their ‘official’ website, and provides us with some neat commentaries about daily life over in Pinerolo (interesting reading and photos!) For instance .. Did you know that stores close between 1pm and 4pm over there? The team was planning on going to Canada Olympic House and to do some shopping in Torino then back at 17:00 local time for a practice I believe ..
About Olympic Medals and Ranking
* If you notice on the Torino2006.org Medal site .. The “Final Rank” in the left side column (I believe) is the official way to reporting a winner of the games – that being the NOC with the most GOLD medals. The “Rank By Total” in the left side (=3 means means tied in 3rd place) is the way that both Canada and USA declares the winner of the games – that being the NOC with the MOST medals. To compare, besides official olympic committees .. here’s an example.
United States Men’s Curling Team has the day off today
* So ..skip Pete Fenson is probably sampling out the local Pizzeria’s around the neighborhood for Dave’s Pizza (that’s his two-Pizza parlor chain business in Bemidji, Minnesota!)
F.Y.I. – Ladies Alpine Skiing – News …
* I just noticed in my Bloglines .. Injured USA skiier Lindsey Kildow was released from hospital yesterday and appears on the Ladies Alpine Skiier list at #31 .. here’s the entire LIST for today’s event! That’s good to hear she’s okay!
‘Magic Broom’ controversy
* If you recall, there was some controversy with the secret computerized brooms Great Britain has been using in training to measure sweeping pressure, and other factors … but Women’s skip Rhona Martin says .. “the controversy over the high-tech brush had been “carried way out of all proportion”. “Basically, it was a stopwatch on a brush and all countries use a stopwatch…we use a sweeping ergometer as a training tool,” she said. “I’ve used it twice in my life and we just use it for practice. It’s linked to a computer and it can tell you how hard you sweep and how fast.” “When we go on the ice we’ve got the same brush, the same stopwatch as every other team, as every other country, so it’s not a magic broom, unfortunately,” she said a little wistfully.
By The Way …
* Speaking of Great Britain statistics, the GBR women’s team is also at 2 wins and 0 losses, and is the only women’s curling team currently undefeated! Go Rhona Go!
oooooops
* (yes- GBR s/b = 2 wins and 0 losses .. I had 1 //ooops! Fixed at End 2)
Tournament Accuracy
* Team Canada skip Brad Gushue .. 76%
* Team Great Britain skip David Murdoch .. 63%
(according to TSN.ca)
Current Standings prior to today’s games
* Great Britain – 2 wins, 0 loss
* Sweden – 3 wins, 0 losses
* Norway – 1 win, 1 loss
* Finland – 1 win, 1 loss
