In Week 1 of the 2011 fantasy football season, there were a lot of surprising players leading the way for the fantasy football world. If you had one of these players in you fantasy starting lineup, pat yourself on the back. Job well done!
Here’s our list of the most surprising fantasy football players in Week 1:
QB Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers
Wow. Who saw that coming. Rookie quarterbacks always struggle — especially early on. But that rule apparently doesn’t apply to Cam Newton. In his first game in the NFL, he racked up 422 passing yards to go along with two touchdown passes and a touchdown run.

RB Ben Tate, Houston Texans
While Ben Tate was a sleeper in the fantasy football shark tanks, it’s still surprising to see him do so well in Week 1 — especially considering he was a backup. He finished with 116 rushing yards and a touchdown run.
WR Early Doucet, Arizona Cardinals
Early DOucet has always had a lot of talent. Putting it together and producing fantasy football numbers? Not so much. But if Week 1 is any indication, he could definitely surprise in 2011.
TE Fred Davis, Washington Redskins
The Redskins passing attack is difficult to predit. However, in Week 1, tight end Fred Davis had a big role. If that keeps up, look at him as a possible 2011 fantasy football sleeper.
