Kirk Hinrich Injury Update – Hamstring Strain

A big reason why the Atlanta Hawks were able to eliminate the Orlando Magic in the first round of the 2011 NBA Playoffs was the play of starting point guard Kirk Hinrich. His timely shooting and rugged defensive play played a vital role in the upset. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Hinrich could be out for the rest of the playoffs.

In Game 6 against the Magic, Hinrich suffered an injury to his right leg. MRI tests have revealed that the injury is a hamstring strain. According to the Hawks doctors, Hinrich’s hamstring strain is considered “significant”.

The Hawks take on Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls in the second round. Hinrich could have taken on Rose and made life difficult for the 2011 NBA MVP. But now it appears as if that job will fall to Jeff Teague, the player most likely to start in Hinrich’s place.

Other options for Hawks coach Larry Drew including starting Jamal Crawford at point guard or sliding Joe Johnson to point guard and starting defensive specialist Damien Wilkins.

Said Drew: “It certainly changes things. He’s our starting point guard. Hopefully he’ll be able to go, but if he’s not, we’ll have to make an adjustment.”
