The Indianapolis Colts tried to bring on Keith Butler to become the team’s new defensive coordinator. However, Butler has decided to instead stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the team’s linebackers coach. The Colts and head coach Chuck Pagano will have to look elsewhere.
Why would Butler turn down the promotion? Word out of Pittsburgh indicates that Butler has been told he will eventually replace Dick LeBeau as the defensive coordinator of the Steelers. LeBeau, who is 74 years old, is returning for the 2012 season but probably won’t coach too much longer after that.
Butler apparently likes the job security in Pittsburgh. The Steelers rarely change coaches and Butler is actually aligned well to take over as a head coach in Pittsburgh or elsewhere in the next five years or so.
As for the Colts, Pagano recently hired Bruce Arians to be the offensive coordinator. Arians was the offensive coordinator for the Steelers last season.
