Josh Beckett was standing in the outfield when he was accidentally hit the head with a baseball off the bat of a team staffer. The Boston Red Sox picture didn’t have to go to the hospital but he was sent home with symptoms of a concussion. Although the Red Sox don’t think Beckett’s injury is serious, they will conduct further tests tomorrow.
Said Terry Francona, manager of the Red Sox: “I think it hit him in the temple. I bet you it felt like a bolt of lightning. That’s not really what you’re expecting. It’s just a fluke thing.”
Ino Guerrero is the staffer who hit the ball that hit Beckett in the head. Francona wasn’t too happy with Guerrero, whose main duty is as a batting practice pitcher.
“I called him a dumb !@#$,” said Francona when asked what he told Guerrero after the incident.
Beckett is coming off of a difficult campaign that saw his ERA balloon to 5.78. If the Red Sox have a legit chance of winning the 2011 World Series, they need their could-be ace to pitch much better this year.
