Joe Paterno is All-Time Winningest Coach

Joe Paterno seems like he’s been coaching forever. In fact, I think he has. But it took until Saturday for him to finally pass Eddie Robinson to become the winningest coach in college football NCAA Division I history. After Penn State beat Illinois, Paterno owned a record 409 wins.

Following the game, Paterno didn’t try to play down the meaning of the record.

Said Paterno: “It really is something I’ve very proud of, to be associated with Eddie Robinson. Something like this means a lot to me — an awful lot.”

Bobby Bowden is third on the list with 377 wins, while Bear Bryant is fourth at 323.

The 84-year-old Paterno has coached at Penn State since 1966. This year, he has his team at No. 16 in the AP Top 25. With no signs of slowing down, Paterno could last another decade at his job.
