Jim Thome, at 40 years of age, is going back to where it all started. The Minnesota Twins traded the slugger to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later. On the season, Thome is hitting .243 with 12 homers, 40 RBIs and a .351 on-base percentage.
The designated hitter began his career as a third baseman for the Indians in 1991 and played in Cleveland until the 2002 season. He’s now able to go back home — something he has said he was open to. In fact, to complete the trade, Thome had to waive a no-trade clause.
The biggest moment of the season so far for Thome was when he hit home run No. 600. He now has 601 homers for his career, which will likely land him in the Hall of Fame one day. But for now, the Indians hope Thome can rekindle some of his old magic and help close the 6.5-game gap between them and the division-leading Detroit Tigers.
