Jason Varitek doesn’t play that much anymore. The 39-year-old catcher has had to adjust to the role of a bench player. But on Wednesday against the New York Yankees, Varitek led a comeback that gave the Boston Red Sox a 9-5 victory.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Yankees scored four runs to take a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of that inning, Varitek hit a double to tie the game. Then in the eighth inning, Varitek hit a two-run homer to provide the final score of the contest.
The winner of this game would take control of the AL East. Now, following the win, the Red Sox lead the division by 1.5 games.
The two teams play again on Thursday. Jon Lester goes for Boston, while New York sends A.J. Burnett to the mound.
