JaMarcus Russell’s is already known as the biggest bust in NFL history. Now, after an arrest on Monday for possession of codeine syrup, Russell is likely to become the poster boy for purple drank — the popular drug that typically combines codeine syrup with 7UP and Jolly Ranchers.
Russell was arrested at his Mobile, Alabama home after an undercover investigation and was later released from jail on a $2,500 bond. Authorities say that Russell didn’t have a prescription for the cough syrup (obviously) but they didn’t reveal how much of it was found at his home.
Purple drank continues to grow in popularity, especially in the southern part of the United States. Hip hop stars such as DJ Screw and Pimp C played a big part in promoting the use of the drug. Unfortunately, DJ Screw and Pimp C both died as a result of their purple drank usage.
As for Russell, this might officially close the door on his NFL career. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, Russell was just horrible as the quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. For his career, Russell had 18 touchdowns to go with 23 interceptions, 22 fumbles and a QB rating of 65.2.
