Almost 100% of the time time, NBA coaches won’t answer a question regarding which team they want to face in the playoffs. George Karl, however, wasn’t afraid to answer the question. He’s also not afraid of the Dallas Mavericks. The outspoken coach of the Denver Nuggets, who has become even more outspoken ever since the Carmelo Anthony trade, was honest when asked the question coaches almost always avoid.
“If we had to pick and choose on it,” said George Karl, “we would probably say 55% Dallas, 45% Oklahoma City.”
George Karl didn’t stop there when talking on ESPN 103.3 FM. He even criticized how the Mavs play.
“In some sense, the jump shot doesn’t go in as much as scoring in the paint,” remarked the coach. “The two things I would say is I wish Dallas would get to the free throw line more and I wish they would score more around the basket.”
Although George Karl is providing bulletin board material for the Mavs, he’s just being honest. The Thunder are one of the hottest teams in the Western Conference. Since trading for Kendrick Perkins and inserting Serge Ibaka into the starting lineup, they’ve been on a roll.
On the other hand, the Mavs are fading. They’ve lost four games in a row — and nine straight against Western Conference playoff teams. If the Nuggets play the Mavs in the postseason in the first round, Denver would be the favorite even though Dallas would have home-court advantage.
