The player everyone wanted in free agency was Cliff Lee. The left-handed superstar pitcher has proven to be one of the top hurlers in all of baseball and one of the most successful in the playoffs. It appeared as if the Cliff Lee sweepstakes were a two horse race between the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers. However, a funny thing happened when Cliff Lee made his decision.
He shocked the world and selected the Philadelphia Phillies. The same Phillies team that traded him a year ago. Lee’s contract with Philadelphia is believed to be for five seasons and around $120 million.
With the Yankees offering more than $150 million, Lee turned down money to return to Philadelphia. During Lee’s stint with the Phillies that included a trip to the World Series, he said that he enjoyed his time with the team and the city. This decision proves he wasn’t joking.
Phillies fans got Christmas early. They now have a rotation featuring Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels. Wow.
