Fair Grounds Today - Feb 21st

Fair Grounds Recap – Feb 20th

Fast main track and firm turf course. Four wire jobs on the main as early-pressing types held the advantage. Stalkers and closers best on the sod.

Hat trick for Shaun Bridgmohan, and Steve Asmussen saddled 2 of the 3. Javier Castellano and Todd Pletcher teamed up for two stakes wins. Miguel Mena rode two stakes winners, and Bret Calhoun saddled a pair of stakes winners on the afternoon. John Jacinto rode two winners early in the card. Michelle Lovell saddled the late double.

Pan Zareta: Double Espresso headed Dubai Majesty in an exciting stretch drive.

Colonel Power: Returning fav Chamberlain Bridge did not disappoint in this turf sprint stakes affair. Jamie Theriot booted home the Bret Calhoun trainee.

General Quarters ran too good to lose in Saturday's Mineshaft Handicap. He has now landed the place in all 3 local starts since returning from a vacation.

Silverbulletday: Quiet Temper made all the running and looked home free, but Tiffany Lass winner Jody Slew got her on the last jump under Miguel Mena. Another stakes win for Bret Calhoun.

Fair Grounds Handicap: Money showed on Pletcher trainee Blues Street, and he rallied for a popular tally in this grass route.

Risen Star: Another Pletcher invader steals the candy as Discreetly Mine was never headed as the top three ran that way all the way around the track. Drosselmeyer the fav was in the photo for the place, but he settled for 4th in a disappointing effort. For the record, he was coming back in three weeks and got no pace help.

Mineshaft Handicap: Friesan Fire went to the lead as expected, but he spit the bit, and Stonehouse edged my top General Quarters by a neck.

Tough luck day on the analysis front as tops Ready To Sing, Dubai Majesty, Quiet Temper, General Quarters, and Smoothcideup all lost photo finishes. I did manage to tab the 12th race exacta ($26.20) and 13th race trifecta ($135.60) on a frustrating afternoon.
