Drosselmeyer came through with a victory in the $1 million Belmont Stakes. The horse that was left out of the Kentucky Derby because it hadn’t earned enough money outlasted the rest of the field to win the final leg of the Triple Crown by three-quarters of a length. Drosselmeyer returned $28.00, $11.60 and $7.70. In second, Fly Down paid $6.80 and $5.10. First Dude returned $4.90 to show.
The 9-5 favorite in the race, Ice Box, was never in contention during the Belmont and ended up finishing ninth in the 12-horse field.
Named for a character in Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” Drosselmeyer earned $600,000 for the win, more than quadrupling his career total.
Again, there was no Triple Crown champion this year. It’s now been 32 years since Affirmed became the 11th Triple Crown winner by weeping the Derby, Preakness and Belmont.
