Donovan McNabb and the Washington Redskins have agreed on a contract extension that can be worth as much as $88 million over the next five seasons. Of that total, approximately $40 million is guaranteed. McNabb is in his first season with the Redskins after playing the first 11 seasons of his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles.
While McNabb is a quality quarterback who has had a fantastic career, this contract extension makes no sense. The Redskins should be in a rebuilding mode — not signing 34-year-old quarterbacks to long-term extensions. Washington should be looking for young pieces who could make the team a championship contender in two or three years.
As for McNabb, you can’t blame him for signing the extension. It’s more money than he would have gotten in free agency. While he is extremely unlikely to win a Super Bowl in Washington, this contract extension was simply too rich to turn away.
All in all, I have one question: why? As far as NFL contract extensions go, this is a head-scratcher for the ages.
