After the Atlanta Braves lost Chipper Jones to an ACL injury, they needed to make a move if they hoped to stay in front of the streaking Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East. By trading with the Chicago Cubs and acquiring Derrek Lee, the Braves did just that. If Lee stays healthy and continues to swing the bat well, he could more than make up for the loss of Chipper Jones.
Lee, who waived a no-trade clause in order to join the Braves, is hitting .251 with 16 homers, 56 RBIs and 63 runs. His batting average is lower than it has been since the 1999 season, mostly due to a nagging back injury. However, in the month of August, he is hitting .306 with four homers in 36 at-bats.
In return, the Cubs got Tyrelle Harris, Jeffrey Lorick and Robinson Lopez. All three players are in the minor leagues and all three players are pitchers.
Lee will play first base for the Braves. Current first baseman Troy Glaus will move over to third base to fill the hole left by the injury to Chipper Jones.
Why did Lee want to go to Atlanta?
“The main thing is we have six weeks left and Atlanta is in first place,” he explained, “and they’re playing great baseball.”
