Derek Jeter Breaks Another Record

It’s been a historic season for Derek Jeter. The New York Yankees shortstop played in his 2,402nd game on Sunday — all with the Yankees. That mark is a new all-time record for the Yankees franchise. Jeter broke a tie with Mickey Mantle.

“I take pride in coming and doing my job,” said Jeter. “I think that’s probably the best way to put it.”

Coming into the game, Jeter had 3,059 hits, 1,754 runs, 1,183 RBIs, 336 stolen bases and 238 home runs to go along with a .313 batting average. This year, despite a slow start, the future Hall of Famer is hitting .296 with four homers and 48 RBIs. Since the All-Star game, he’s hitting .353 and has silence the critics who claimed that the 37-year-old was too old to be an everyday shortstop for a championship contender.

As it stands, the Yankees are 2.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. That said, they have a comfortable six-game lead in the Wild Card race.
