After two straight injury riddled seasons, the Washington Redskins are in search of a new starting running back. That became official on Monday when the Redskins released Clinton Portis. Portis had been the team’s starting running back since the 2004 season when he was acquired from the Denver Broncos.
Although there were bumpy moments at times, Portis goes down as one of the best running backs in Redskins history. In fact, if he would have stayed one more season, he likely could have become the franchie’s all-time leading rusher.
His best season came in 2005 when he rushed for 1,516 yards and 11 touchdowns. For his career, Portis has 9,923 rushing yards and 75 touchdowns.
Who is going to be the starting running back for the Redskins in 2011? Right now, Ryan Torain appears to be the man. Last year, Torain ran for 742 yards and four touchdowns while playing in only ten games.
