The St. Louis Cardinals needed a win to guarantee at least a tie for a spot in the 2011 baseball playoffs. With all the cards on the table, Chris Carpenter was a true ace as the Cardinals won by a final count of 8-0.
Carpenter pitched a two-hit shutout while striking out 11 batters and giving up only one walk. The win improved his record to 11-9 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.45.
Honestly, this game was over early on. The Cardinals scored five runs in the first inning — and never looked back.
Now the Cardinals wait to see if the Atlanta Braves can beat the Philadelphia Phillies. If the Braves win, the two teams will play one game for a spot in the playoffs. If the Braves lose, the Cardinals are automatically in.
