The Carolina Panthers aren’t known as big spenders. However, shortly after the NFL lockout was lifted, they inked Charles Johnson to a deal worth a reported $72 million. The defensive end was one of the most sought after players in free agency. Carolina, judging by the size of their offer, obviously wasn’t interested in losing him.
Johnson basically replaced Julius Peppers in Carolina and definitely took advantage of the starting gig. Last season, the third round pick had 11.5 sacks.
The native of Georgia was understandably happy with Carolina’s offer: “To say I’m thankful doesn’t begin to describe it. I’m so excited. I’m ready to get back to football.”
Other teams interested in Johnson included the Denver Broncos and the Atlanta Falcons.
