Braves Lose, Collapse Complete

Wow. The Atlanta Braves looked assured of a spot in the 2011 baseball playoffs just a few weeks ago. But after losing on Wednesday, the Braves completed a tumble all the way out of the playoffs. Their 4-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in 13 innings handed the postseason spot to Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Braves took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning but star rookie closer Craig Kimbrel couldn’t close the door. In extra innings, Hunter Pence had an RBI single to send Atlanta to an early vacation.

To fall out of the playoffs, the Braves lost eight of their final ten games — including their final five. The Cardinals, on the other hand, went 16-5 in their final 21 games to give themselves a chance to win another World Series championship.
