Over the course of the last four season, Brandon Webb of the Arizona Diamondbacks has been one of the best pitchers in baseball. This season, he never got a chance to show what he can do. This weekend, Webb decided to have shoulder surgery to repair an injury that has kept him off the mound since opening day.
In his only start this season, Webb gave up six earned runs in four innings. In the last three years, he’s had at least 16 wins and an ERA no higher than 3.30. In 2006, Webb was selected as the National League Cy Young Award winner.
An exact timeline of when he’ll begin to pitch again hasn’t been released. The surgery will be handled by Dr. Keith Meister. Although Meister is associated with the Texas Rangers, the Diamondbacks say that they agree with the surgery option.
Right now, the Diamondbacks don’t have much to play for. They are 46-59 and stand 18.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Coming into the season with high expectations, the Diamondbacks have struggled for virtually the entire 2009 baseball season.
