Blue Jays Sign Darren Oliver

The last time we saw Darren Oliver, he was blowing a save in the World Series for the Texas Rangers. The old wily veteran won’t be returning to Texas. Instead, he has signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. The contract also includes a team option for a second season.

The 41-year-old is still a very effective pitcher. Last year, he had a 2.29 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. In 51 innings, he gave up only 47 hits while striking out 44 batters. As a lefty out of the bullpen, Oliver is one of the best there is at his job.

The Rangers were able to let Oliver go because they have an extremely deep bullpen. Plus, with the way he choked when needed most, the fans probably wouldn’t have reacted too kindly to Oliver being on the mound in an important situation.

With the Blue Jays, expect Oliver to be the team’s go-to pitcher when dangerous left-handed batters come to the plate.
