The Cy Young Award race in the American League is a three-man sprint. Justin Verlander (17), C.C. Sabathia (16) and Jered Weaver (14) have the most wins in the AL and are also the the 2011 AL Cy Young Award favorites. Which of the pitchers is in the lead? Here’s our ranking:
1. Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers
Not only does he have the most wins in the AL, his 2.35 is third in the league. He also has the Tigers in first place. Having a no-hitter is another check mark in his favor.
2. Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels
Although his competition has been somewhat weak this season, his 1.78 ERA isn’t nothing to scoff. His microscopic WHIP of 0.94 is also very impressive.
3. C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees
Before getting blown up by the Boston Red Sox in his last start, C.C. Sabathia was on fire. He’ll need to get hot again if he wants to overtake the two pitchers above him.

Kori,
You are very correct, Weaver’s WHIP is very good…you called it “microscopic”. That said, you seem to forget to mention that Verlander’s WHIP is BETTER at 0.87… would that be “electron microscopic”? Verlander and Sabathia don’t play Seattle every third game, so perhaps this is why their ERA is a bit higher? Verlander will win the Cy Young this year in a BLOW-OUT, and Sabathia will come in a respectable second. Frankly, I’m not sure that Weaver is even the best pitcher in LA, as Kershaw has a better fastball and has struck out more for the terrible Dodgers and Dan Haren has actually pitched as well as Weaver when one considers that he has faced MUCH better competition. (Heron’s last 5 games have been against the Yankees, Minn, Detroit, Cleveland, and Texas… while Weaver has pitched 5 of his last 10 against Seattle and the terrible Dodgers…LOL Coincidence…maybe!)
