Oceanic Airlines flight 815, a commercial airliner flying from Sydney to Los Angeles breaks apart in mid-air and is strewn across a seemingly deserted tropical island in the South Pacific. After the lands, the 48 survivors find themselves on an island of harsh terrain, cruel weather and dark secrets.

Sayid repairs the transceiver and makes an attempt to send out a help signal, but instead receives a mysterious French transmission. Sawyer shoots a polar bear in the jungle.

Jack and Hulrey discover secrets about Kate’s past, as the marshal’s life hangs in the balance. Michael warns Walt to stay away from Locke, who has taken an interest in Walt. Kate’s purpose for being in Australia is revealed.
01.04: Walkabout (Locke)

When the airplane’s food supply runs out, Locke volunteers to hunt for wild boar. Kate and Michael join him. Meanwhile, Claire and Sayid decide to conduct a memorial service for those who died.

Dehydrated, sleep-deprived, and chasing hallucinations of his deceased father, Jack is forced to make a decision on whether he will become the leader of his fellow survivors.

After he is attacked by Jin, Sun reveals to Michael that she can speak English. Locke learns about Charlie’s drug addiction. The survivors argue about whether they should stay on the beach or move to the caves. Walt and the others are shocked when Michael is brutally beaten.

Locke helps Charlie with his drug problem. Sayid tries to triangulate the French transmission. Jack is determined to leave the beach, favoring the sanctuary of the recently-found caves less than a mile away.
01.08: Confidence Man (Sawyer)

Sayid is forced to torture Sawyer when he refuses to give up potentially life-saving medicine to Shannon. Charlie attempts to persuade Claire to move to the caves.
01.09: Solitary (Sayid)

Rousseau, the Frenchwoman from the transmission that the survivors picked up, takes Sayid prisoner and tells him that she believes there are other people living on the island. Hurley builds a golf course to relieve the survivors’ stress.
01.10: Raised by Another (Claire)

Claire’s nightmares cause her to worry that she and her unborn child are in danger. Hurley’s island census reveals that Ethan was not a passenger on the plane.
01.11: All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues (Jack)

Charlie and Claire are kidnapped by Ethan, and several of the survivors set out in search of them. In the jungle, Boone and Locke find a hatch embedded in the ground.
01.12: Whatever the Case May Be (Kate)

Sawyer and Kate find a briefcase but Kate struggles to keep it for herself. Rose comforts a depressed Charlie, and Sayid enlists Shannon’s help in translating Rousseau’s maps.
01.13: Hearts and Minds (Boone)

Boone questions the benefit of his time spent at the hatch. Locke forces Boone to examine his love for Shannon. The other survivors question their trust of Locke. Boone’s unscheduled trip to Australia is shown through flashbacks.
01.14: Special (Michael, Walt)

Michael confronts Walt, who has been studying knife skills under Locke, and enlists his son’s help in scavenging parts from the wreck to build a raft. Walt finds himself fighting for his life when a polar bear attacks him in the jungle.
01.15 Homecoming (Charlie)

Claire returns to camp with no recollection as to what happened to her, and while Ethan attempts to get her back, Charlie and the other survivors are determined to prevent him. When Ethan returns, Charlie shoots Ethan.
01.16: Outlaws (Sawyer)

Sawyer, with Kate’s help, chases after a boar he believes is purposely harassing him. They also divulge secrets to each other. Hurley asks Sayid to help a disturbed Charlie.
01.17: In Translation (Jin)
Aired: February 23, 2005
When Jin is blamed for burning the raft, Sun reveals that she can speak English to her husband and the other survivors. Sayid and Shannon’s relationship begins to blossom. Jin remembers getting the permission of Sun’s father to marry her.
01.18: Numbers (Hurley)
Aired: March 2, 2005
Hurley obsesses and searches for Rousseau when he recognizes a series of numbers she had written repeatedly. Locke asks Claire for assistance in building a crib for her unborn baby. Hurley remembers winning the lottery and fearing a curse from his lottery numbers.
01.19: Deus Ex Machina (Locke)
Aired: March 30, 2005
After having a vision, Lock and Boone travel into the jungle to look for a way to open the hatch. Boone climbs into a beechcraft at the top of a cliff and is fatally injured as the plane hits the ground. Kate asks Jack to help Sawyer with his headaches.
01.20: Do No Harm (Jack)

As Jack tries to save a dying Boone, Claire goes into labor, forcing Kate to act as a midwife. Sayid surprises Shannon with a romantic date on the beach. Boone dies, and Claire gives birth to a son. Jack remembers his wedding with Sarah.
01.21: The Greater Good (Sayid)
Aired: May 4, 2005
Locke reappears at Boone’s funeral, bursting his tension with Jack. Shannon asks Sayid to avenge her brother’s death, forcing Sayid to choose between his love interest and his morals. Shannon steals the guns and fires at Locke; however, the bullet only grazes him.
01.22: Born to Run (Kate)

When Michael falls ill due to poisoning, the survivors suspect Sawyer and Kate. Locke shows the hatch to Sayid and Jack, who have different views on what to do with it. Kate remembers the death of her childhood sweetheart, as a result of visiting her hospitalized mother.
01.23: Exodus: Part 1 (Various)
Aired: May 18, 2005
Rousseau warns the survivors that “the Others” are coming. Jack sends the survivors to the caves and leads a group to retrieve dynamite to open the hatch. Michael’s raft sets sail.
01.24: Exodus: Part 2 (Various)
Aired: May 25, 2005
Some of the survivors head back to the hatch, intent on blowing it open. Rousseau kidnaps Claire’s baby, causing Charlie and Sayid to chase after her. The Others take Walt off the raft and blow up the raft. The rest of the survivors continue to move off the beach in fear of an imminent attack.
