Hey, Zooey fans! I ran across this really great interview with Zooey in DailyMail. It was done because the movie for which she voiced the role of a penguin lifeguard, Surf’s Up!, will premiere in the UK on August 10. Here’s an excerpt:

“When I was two or three, I watched The Wizard of Oz over and over again,” she says, “and was always trying to figure out how to jump into the screen.
“My mother told me to use my imagination. I’ve been acting, singing and dancing ever since – and I can’t stop.”
With a sense of wonder in her voice, she adds, “Why would anyone not want to be an actor?”
Now 27 and an irresistible gamine, Zooey (pronounced Zoe and named after the character in J D Salinger’s Franny and Zooey) is one of Hollywood’s most distinctive young stars.
Even transformed into an animated character in the family comedy Surf’s Up, a behind-the-scenes look at the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship, she steals the screen as Lani, a feisty penguin lifeguard with a pair of expressive eyes just like Zooey’s own enormous baby blues.
“Lani’s the smartest character in the film,” she says, sprawled on a chair in the flat in Vancouver, Canada that she is living in while working on her latest project (a miniseries updating The Wizard of Oz – so she’s finally achieved her dream).

Zooey D. is not truly named after the Salinger character, because if she were, then she would pronounce the name correctly.
Sweet Jesus, every time I read an interview with Zo, I go like “oh yeah, I do that to..”
