That isn't a comment on Zac's abilities to play the role, but more on the idea of aging Jonny to age 16-18. The original 1960's JQ had Jonny at age 8; the 1990s version moved him forward to 11-12. Not sure the late teen age would work for the character, and we'd end up with another bum movie like "Josie and the Pussycats." OTOH, they GOT to cast Tim Matheson in at least a cameo in this movie!
