What's In the Box?

Have you seen What’s In the Box? I hadn’t even heard of it, until I saw this post by Doc Jensen at EW.com. What’s In the Box? is a 10-minute amateur short film that’s taking YouTube by storm. It plays out as sort of a mashup of the video game Half-Life and JJ Abrams‘ Cloverfield. Abrams’ influence is all over it, with a pair of viral websites that reference Lost’s Hanso Foundation, and Lost composer Michael Giacchino’s score used in the film itself. It’s one high-quality piece of work that defies the term “amateur,” with some genuinely amazing visual effects, smart direction, and a clever, action-packed script.

What has this to do with Lost, you ask? The answer is supplied by Doc Jensen, in the aforementioned article. It seems that What’s In the Box?’s oh-so-subtle references to Lost (see: last paragraph) have led some fans to believe it has some kind of viral connection to the show. Not so, claims Damon Lindelof, who’s as impressed as everyone else with the quality of the short film, but says it has no connection whatsoever to Lost.
