I never watch TV shows right when they air. It’s one of the things that happen when I want to watch several that air at the same time. (I love my TiVo.) So when I got to finally watch last night’s House episode, I got to thinking about it in a big way. Then I started to wonder what all of you thought about it.
First of all, it’s interesting that one of the unusual illnesses I talked about recently was discussed as one of the possible diagnoses for the POTW. For a while, they thought he had alien hand syndrome.
We were told that it would be the most shocking House episode ever. Did it live up to that? I’d say that it was a strong second to the episode where Kutner died, but that it did definitely come as a surprise. (If you haven’t watched it yet…you should come back to read the rest of this post after you watch it. This is no surprise you want to be spoiled.)
First of all, I was wondering last week why the love scene between House & Cuddy was so extremely short. Now it seems to make more sense. But now I’m sad that it wasn’t real. Huddy fans, what are your thoughts on this?
I was really enjoying the happiness that House showed when he woke up and found Cuddy’s lipstick by the bathroom sink. And the way he was so happy all day long at the hospital was cute too. But I knew something bad was going to happen next when he announced to the whole hospital about their interlude.
It was a big surprise to me that House saw Kutner in the room…I should have noticed his name in the press release, but I didn’t. But somehow, I think that’s what David Shore wanted…
We now know why they did the “top secret” filming at the closed mental hospital in New Jersey. It had to be for the scene with Wilson dropping off House. Now I wonder what next season will bring us. Will episodes take place with House as a patient…helping to diagnose patients over the phone?
The look on Cuddy’s face when she realized that House was not well was very touching. And the look on House’s face as he walked into the hospital and looked back at Wilson was heart-breaking. It’s touching to know that even a misanthrope like House has people who care about him. Wilson clearly does, and it was very evident in the last few scenes.
So, fellow House fans, what are your thoughts about the episode? Did it shock you the way it did me? We had suspected that House would be committed, but having so much of what we had seen turn out to be his hallucination was really surprising. The acting was fantastic. How do you think this will play out next season?
And let’s not forget that Cameron & Chase got married!! The thing that kept running through my mind during the wedding scene was that it must have been quite strange for Jennifer Morrison & Jesse Spencer to film that scene. They once were actually engaged and I think she broke his heart when she broke it off.
Yes, we know that in a joking interview, Jesse said that he would leave the show if Chase & Cameron ever got married, but we now know he’s going to be part of the show all next season and the characters are now married, so that was false. I’m wondering if he knew that was where the characters would go when he made the statement. The House writers love to keep the cast in the dark about what will happen in the show next.
Are you happy that Cameron & Chase finally got married? Does this put the Hameron question to rest, finally? How will it affect their working together in the hospital?
And how do you think the developments in the last few episodes will impact House’s relationship with Cuddy. Surely, she knows that he loves her. What do you see happening with that?
And another thing caught me off guard. House analyzed the coffee and said that it was proof that she cares about him. Did that really happen? Was it her coffee, or was it Wilson’s? She was talking to Wilson when House came in. So if she was having amorous feelings, which one of them was the object of the feelings? Hmmm…
Obviously, this episode makes us question everything we thought we knew about the characters. I really want to know what your thoughts are. Let me know. :-)

I was so disappointed with the ending of House. Hugh Laurie and Lisa Edelstein both deserved an award for their acting skills in the last two episodes. It was good writing but I thought they were too cruel with House. We actually saw what House would be like if he openly expressed himself with someone – and he was happy. Hallucination or not, it was so enjoyable to watch. And then – everything came tumbling down in the last two minutes. ;__;
I really hope they can help “House” out in season 6. Not being able to practice medicine?!! How is that worse than seeing House all bubbly over Cuddy. At least it’d be a happy continuation! (NEVER “ending”… House forever~!)
AMAZING performances! It broke my heart when I saw the look of fright on Wilson’s face when Cuddy brought House into his office. And driving to the hospital, not a word being said, arriving and House giving Wilson his personal things like his wallet and watch. Finally House looking back at Wilson as the door closes behind him.
The Emmys don’t even deserve Hugh showing up for their stupid awards. There’s not a Hollywood award good enough for Hugh. AMAZING!!
@ Claudya
I almost think this is going to make Cuddy realize that she really does love House, now that he finally realized he really does love her, and her “bastard” child.. and, call me crazy, but I also believe Chase and Camerons wedding was a foreshadow for House and Cuddy…
Well, i think House is a role to be not happy at all (sad), cause till now, only person he likes for sure was Stacy! For me as a fan, that´s so boring. I´m wainting that at 6th season House could bring some kind of real engajament between him and Cuddy or another person.
So yes, I absolutely LOVE Hugh Laurie he is amazing!!!!!
So I agree with GeeLady– however, I believe the hallucinations stem back from when Cuddy and Wilson secretly tried to “fix” his brain to cure the pain, the same episode he was shot.. because they just slightly touched on it, he hallucinated for a little while and it went away. Then again when Amber died, and SURPISE, another tragedy…Kutner dying [or going to work for Obama, lol] randomly also.
Now, what is going to happy in season 6..how are they going to do this.. are they going to make it a big dream? was Wilson day dreaming that Cuddy walked House in? You never know…
Good luck to the writers because this is going to be a toughie to take off from, but I cant wait=)
First of all, Kudos to Hugh! I love him and the work he does! I was pretty confused and I guess I have to watch it all over again! I hope that I’m not so confused the second time! The episode was not really what I’d call House style! POTW came to short! It was all so fast over! I’m hoping that this Huddy thing will really happen! I love them both so much! Honestly I’d love it more if Sela Ward would come back! I can’t wait for season six! I’m wondering what will happen!
So that my opinion! Writing on a iPhone in a driving bus isn’t that easy!
Love to all House fans!
Meli Melzzzz *House fan number one in Austria!* ^_^
I picked up the parallel to Holmes. House also lives at 221B (that flashes by at one point at least outside his apartment), and he plays the piano to meditate the way Holmes plays violin. But what specific pain did Sherlock Holmes have? I thought he used cocaine to ward off boredom.
@comanchepilot: Carl Reiner is a VERY funny guy for sure. He drove me to my 6th grade prom with his son, Robbie, my “date.” My dad drove us home. “I said, Dad, how come u aren’t as funny as Mr Reiner?”
I think the back story of the ep – well – the writers are funny guys. Carl Reiner wrote the Man with 2 Brains. He wrote all sorts of scenes and movies and scripts which had sick connections with plot elements – or – maybe I’m seeing connections that are not there.
The story would have been better if they simply had the entire season be a dream sequence from his brain surgery from last year in the last episode . . . . Amber was then really alive – it would have been a better result to the season.
sally:
David Shore has said many times that he based the character of Greg House on that of Sherlock Holmes. They are both enigmatic, cranky perfectionists that see and understand things no one else can. And both characters have an addiction that comes from their chronic pain. House: Vicodin…Holmes: Cocaine. They also both have a long-suffering best friend and sidekick, aka Wilson/Watson.
I love the parallel, since I have always loved the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. :-)
@greg: yes, maybe it’s a metaphor, but we’re not all in the kind of blindingly ceaseless pain that vicodin hardly touches before it makes you dopey. I spent 12 years like that, I know its non-metaphorical side. Wonder is the story idea came from all the returning vets with untouchable chronic pain.
Really I can’t figure out how hallucinating sex is love or caring, but I’m not a huddy either. ;/
They should also have so many more scenes with Cuddy & her baby. I’ve grown to actually hate Cuddy this season, but this episode restored my faith in her. Seeing her with her baby is really what did it for me. That is what I want to see. A strong SINGLE mother that cares for her child above all else & before everything/everyone else. It’s beautiful & there really needs to be more characters that are shown like that. I hope they turn Cuddy back into that strong powerful dean of medicine she use to be & drop the cheesy huddy act.
@ vicodinvodka: I hope there are more than just two more seasons. Far as I can remember, there are still a lot of medical zebras around, ergo: enough material.
@ sally: Aren’t we all in pain sometimes? I feel with House, too, because I’ve gone through part of what happened to him myself…
Hugh is contracted for at least till season 8, thats two more seasons, hopefully
I LOVE House …,and I really dont want them to cancel it !!!!!!!
Because the show always seems accurate about House’s chronic pain, I thought it was odd that he was detoxed overnight and felt great the next day, but I just thought they were stretching the truth to make it fit the storyline. Never occurred to me that the whole thing was a hallucination! I was truly shocked by the finale’s revelation. And I totally agree that the last scene was heartbreaking. Yes, Hugh Laurie’s face was an incredible acting achievement, but so was Robert Sean Leonard’s. I can’t remember any other TV series that wrenched us in the same way. That old mental institution is grim in a way that few that are still open are.
Does anyone know why David Shore chose to focus so much of the show on chronic pain? It’s an odd topic for a popular series like House.
Jessica,
The scene with Cuddy and Wilson where she asks if he’s there to talk about House does make sense when you realize that the ‘reality’ is that House came to her office, they had a short conversation that ended abruptly when he made the remark about her b****** child, and she walked out on in. As far as Cuddy is concerned, that was the ‘last straw’ that convinced her that she and House could never have a personal relationship and she went into his office the next day to make it clear that she’s the boss, and he’s an employee, and that’s it. So, she thinks Wilson is there to try and talk about House’s insensitive remark to her and why she was so upset about it, and Wilson thinks that ‘me and House’ refers to she and House having sex. As countless others have noted, it’s the “Sixth Sense” type of writing, where on first viewing we are convinced we are seeing/hearing one thing, but once the ‘reveal’ has been made, you go back and realize that you were making assumptions that are later proven wrong, and that what you thought you saw/heard was actually something else.
@Willmore! I agree! :D
If not, they MUST have him guestplaying in some other way. :) They must! XD
It was a brillant and devatatingly sad episdie. House has lost the one thing he valued in himself; his reational mind. HL was absolutely amazing. Give the man his Emmy please. I wept at his distress and loss of happiness in the end. This is serious stuff & expect Season 6 to start off harshly. I hope Season 6 will be about House’s redemption. Short of dying, the poor man has fallen as far as he could. I’ll be worrying about him all summer !
@kade: Think there should be a part of this blog about “You know you’ve watched too much House when…” In a way, I’m obsessed, too. Some might think I’m really crazy. Some examples? Well: I found most of the series’ main characters at my workplace and in my personal life (except for 4 of them, still searching, and of course I’m House), …you make yourself a PPTH id card like the original from the series and everyone starts calling you “House” and you play along.
…you find a website where you can buy that “bitchin’” cane and you DO it, just for fun (or more).
…you start writing in medical web forums, using the appropriate nickname, looking for interesting cases and actually solve them. (Using real medical literature, not some web-based encyclopedia) – Yeah, I did all that and then some… I guess some people might consider putting me in the loony bin, too.
@Willmore: Yep, Stephen Fry – that’d be the day ;-) I think he once promised to make a cameo on House. How long will we have to wait for that one I wonder…
@ karen Wright: “THey have hired a real French doctor – is he the shrink?”
NOPE! that was an April joke!
But Stephen Fry as his shrink would be hilarous!!
