What Did You Think Of the Bones Season Finale?

The season 4 finale of Bones certainly wasn’t what I expected, how about you? I knew there would be a “twist” but even the twist is confusing, I guess. After reading through everyone’s comments so far, it seems that there’s not even a clear agreement among everyone about what the episode was about.

Was the entire thing a story that Brennan was writing to occupy herself while she waited for Booth to wake up? Was the whole thing a dream that Booth had while in the coma?

If it’s Brennan’s story, then it must mean that she realizes that she and Booth should be together. (And they were really cute together, weren’t they?)

If it’s Booth’s dream, wouldn’t he remember Brennan when he woke up? And if he did have amnesia from the brain surgery, how long will it last? Will his memory return, or will he have to make all new memories of who everyone is?

Since Hart Hanson and the cast all say that it “wasn’t a dream or hallucination,” to me, that means that it must have been the story Brennan was writing. Otherwise, it would be Booth’s dream. So technically, they were right, even if they were all very sneaky about it. ;-)

Did you enjoy the way all the characters were different? How did you like it that we got to see all the interns and the other cast members in the same episode…especially Zack?!

Here are my own personal thoughts. I know you may not agree, but that’s the beauty of things. We can all have different opinions and still love the same show. Personally, I hate alternate reality episodes and I don’t like “clip shows” either. Just give me real episodes. The others seem like cheater episodes to me…sorry, Hart!! You are terrific! This is just my own humble opinion.

But given that it was an alternate reality episode, I think Hart did a great job of writing it. And I loved Mötley Crüe!!! They were awesome.

I’m not totally upset about the B&B hookup being what it was (or wasn’t) since the discussion of the baby happened before any of that. So I expect that after Booth struggles to remember everyone and everything, the baby will still be a topic on the table. And we still have the sexual tension between the characters and the anticipation of them really getting together. So that’s not bad either. I just wasn’t such a fan of the alternate reality. I found it not as interesting as if the characters were themselves. But, again, that’s just me.

As for John Francis Daley’s band Dayplayer, aka Gormagon, was great and their MySpace site is here and you can clips of both of the songs they sang on the show here:

and here:

Now I want to hear what you think about the episode. And what do you expect to happen next season (Hey, let’s all be excited that there WILL BE a next season!!) Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Deborah, you can be right too. What you said makes sense too. It can be both of them… we have to wait to know, for sure.

I watched the finale again this morning — 20/20 hindsight is so helpful! This time I watched and listened for subtleties. There are clever things, cute things, funny things, but there are some insightful things too. If you can, watch again and see what you think. I’m planning on watching again myself!
BTW, I get my fix watching Bones reruns on TNT every day!! I love seeing them over and over again and watching how everything grows and progresses between Bones and Booth and all the rest of the characters. I always see something I didn’t catch the last time around. DVR’s are the best things EVER!

Well said Deborah! And many thanks, Jill! I have to admit, going without Bones for such a long time is going to stink (thank goodness for this site so I can get my fix through video clips). Fall can’t come soon enough!

I agree with Melinda’s assessment of Brennan being the one who knows. She’s the one who’s been asking all the questions to make some sort of sense of her feelings. She’s the one who has a distorted view of family. She’s the one who would, when she finally realizes what she does want, blurts out “I want to have a baby!”
I admit that up until the Mayhem episode, I figured it was Booth, but then Gordon Gordon (who definitely should be back on the show – not only is he funny and brings a different perspective, but I loved the interaction between he and Sweets) made his comments to Sweets and I started thinking it through. Given all her hang ups because of the abandonment, etc., as well as her completely analytical and anthropological/scientific way of looking at everything – not to mention her complete lack of interpersonal skills – it’s not too difficult to understand how she would grasp her OWN feelings, but struggle with them because she doesn’t recognize Booth’s feelings! She is pretty narcissistic, after all – she wants to have a baby because she thinks her genes need to be passed on!
One last thing – at the end of Mayhem, when they leave Sweets’ office, the camera moves in to the mark-ups on Sweets’ book – he’s changed the title to be “Bones – the heart of the matter” –
But hey, it’s all speculation – and I could be wrong!

As far as the finale goes, it took a bit to get into the “story”, but I really did enjoy seeing them as a devoted, loving couple. And I loved the way all the other actors were portrayed as being so different from their real characters.
I did suck most of the air out of the room on hearing Booth’s words. But, after reading Sherilyn’s and Mika’s comments, I see there could be lots of different implications to what he said. Bottom line – we ALL have to wait for the next season to find out — and I’m pretty sure Hart Hanson will come up with something none of us have thought about!
    I LOVE this show :-D

    the ending SUCKED…

    To Liz

The episode is 3×21 Mayhem on the Cross…

i thought it was awsome the finale… can’t wait for season 5!!! people…the sex WAS REAL

  8. By natalie

and I totally agree with your point Denise about being “slimed”. I think thats why its so upsetting…that we were all led along so that they could pull in big ratings. What an insult to the fans.

  9. By natalie

I agree with your comments Lynn about watching an alternate reality…fine for during the season, but for the finale? I wanted to see the real characters, and see them develop in some way, but instead we saw completely different people for almost the entire episode.
I do feel like I’ve been tricked/cheated about the B&B hookup. They had the fans beleiving that it would be REAL and it wasn’t. Some people have brought up the point that it wouldn’t have made sense given they hadn’t really worked up to sex in the preceding episodes, but I think thats not the point. Bottom line: that was unfair, and I think insulting to the fans. We love this show, so don’t telll us something is going to happen if it isn’t actually going to. If you tell us something will happen, do it!
Overall, I was disappointed in the episode. Even aside from the cheat about the hookup, an alternate reality is just a really weak premise for a finale. However, I thought the ending was intriguing. The problem though with such an ending is that it makes me think the actually B&B hookup will be even further away.
I definitely still love this show, and will keep watching, but I no longer will trust Hart and the writers if they say something will happen. I love Emily and David, and will keep watching for them.

Well I loved it and I think it was very clever. I think the sex scene was in fact real, because, as someone already pointed out, did you notice the two different clocks? One is before the big flash off white light, and one is after, and notice that there is a flash of white light just after the sex scene and just before we go back to reality and the hospital room. So I reckon that the sex scene was real, but in the future…The End in the Beginning…would make sense, plus Brennan asks Booth ‘Do you love me?’. That’s classic insecure Brennan, which she wasn’t in the AU part, she wasn’t as insecure is normally etc. So I think this is an episode you have to watch more than once to catch all of the little nuances in the episode. And I loved the amnesia, well I hate the fact it’s a cliffy and we have to wait to find out what happens, but I don’t hate the storyline. It leaves so many possibilities for next season. And think about the ‘reunion’ as it were when Booth rememebers…major BB moment…it’s going to make at least Brennan’s feelings, if not Booth’s as well a hell of a lot more intense. And think, Hart did it this way to get us all talking, and look… he definitely succeeded! Anyways, I loved every single second!

    To Denise,
You did say a lot what was in my mind about this episode. Especially abou the fake B&B hook up. The compartion with Jim and Pam was great. It’s a perfect well handle relationship, I didn’t ruin the show. But I don’t think that was a bad episode, the problem was… SEASON FINALE. Hart boy, you should’nt did that in the season finale. I expected more.

    To Melinda,
I think Booth is the one who knows. Remember what he did say to Perotta about Brennan (The Princess and the Pear.) when was taken pain killers? “In f anything happens to her, you know, that silky black hair, and that soft skin…” that’s was kind of a confession. And Brennan says that she doen’t know why Booth is so protective, and Perotta “You really don’t,do you?” in a very ironic way. And Sweets sees that too, when he understand what Gordon said about the two of then. I watched the scene over and over… Booth is the one who knows, in my opinion.

    So, Bones CRAP finale again.
the latest finales of Bones just ruin all that actually happened in the season.

  13. By karen

ok, so am I to think that the show was all a story that Temp was writing? or was it Booth’s dream? or both?(them being in sync)

  14. By Melinda

But I must disagree with you, Allie. Brennan isn’t the brains. Sure, she is smart and rational, but she’s got the heart and emotions, too. She just doesn’t set them free or show them, you know?

  15. By Melinda

    To Nerak,
Personally, I thought from the beginning that it was Brennan who realized what she shared with Booth, because if you recall, Dr. Wyatt said ‘one of them realizes their feelings for each other and STRUGGLES WITH IT EVERYDAY.’ Of course it’s Brennan. She struggles because she has a dilemma when it comes to trusting people and having relationships, and tries to convince herself that she isn’t in love with booth but acutally is. Mental monologue, you know? She’s stuck in between wanting Booth and badly and not wanting to get hurt. That’s one hell of a struggle. So, I think it’s Brennan. Booth knows very well and can easily admit it to himself, and as long as there is no risk of losing her to another man, he is ready to wait until she’s ready. Brennan’s the one who realizes and struggles, not booth.

  16. By Allie

and I commend Denise Lynn for her rant as it expresses all the feeling that I am unable to articulate through the written word.

  17. By Allie

I knew Hart would screw us over. If they get together the show is a goner. I think Brennen still has a lot of growing to do as a person. I loved the episode as a stand alone story but as a part of the series I dont get the point of it. Hopefully next season they will clear up a few things. I knew Hart would be heartless and gives us nothing in the end. It was too much to hope for. It was a bit cruel to lead fans on the way he did. But if we really thought about it we knew it would come out this way you could see it especially at the end of The Critic In The Cabernet where it was going. But the twist really was that Brennen was writing the story giving credence to the threory that she is coming to a realisation about how she feels about Booth because Booth is definitely the one that battles with his feeling for her because he is the heart and she is the brains. I just hate the fact we have to wait months to find out what happens. PAINFULL!!
So I stand by the phrase I live my life by
Prepare for the worst but hope for the best and then you are never dissappointed…

    and I wasnt.

I absolutely hated it. After all that hype about B&B hooking up and then to betray that promise by having them go into an alternate reality/dream/fictional universe or whatever that was. It was a total rip off and I feel like the writers totally copped out on the audience and cheated the loyal fans who have been doggedly following the show for the past 4 years.

And I totally agree with Montana. It wasn’t B&B, it was some contrived, fake B&B. And who really cares about B&B in fantasy la-la land? I certainly don’t and I felt no connection to any of the characters in that episode.

It was a novelty and I’m sure it was a fun switch for the cast and crew to play different roles (and wear great costumes) and create a really different set, but I wasn’t invested in the goings on of that fictional universe and I really couldn’t bring myself to care.

I felt like it was a total waste of my time and I was bored and restless throughout most of the episode — just waiting to get back to the actual story arc of the characters in whom I’d actually invested. And I got a whole 43 seconds or something like that of the real B&B story arc, which is utterly ridiculous! And it wasn’t just B&B that got put on hold, if you’ll remember, but also the story arcs of Angela & Hodgins and Cam and her new daughter, too.

And I haven’t invested in 4 seasons of B&B to have to start all over from scratch in season 5 with this “Who are you?” nonsense. That’s why I don’t watch soap operas. I know it’s a season finale and you have to up the ante, but really? Amnesia? Really, really? It just seems so lame and tired and overdone!

And I have to admit that I’m kind off ticked off by the whole situation and I definitely was not satisfied with the season finale. I also thought a lot of the episode was trite and stereotypical — what’s his name as a rapper with a real gangsta for a brother. PLEASE!

And I can’t believe that that was the “payoff” that we’d been promised all year. That was not a payoff — that was more like a bait and switch! Where was the commitment? Where was the follow-through?

The Private Practice season finale was insane, but at least they had the decency to commit to the storyline and follow it through, but to me the Bones season finale felt more like a tease or an evasion — like they were just trifling with the audience. (Were they just trying to finagle a 5th season out of the network?)

At any rate, after watching the show for so long, I really don’t appreciate being trifled with. Just tell me the evolving story of this couple and their accompanying work “family.” Why do you have to go all retro JR/Dallas by pulling one of those “it never happened dream sequences?” It wasn’t cute then and it’s definitely not cute now!

For me, the only saving grace was that I was very happy to see ZACK, well unZack back on the show! I really enjoyed seeing Eric Millegan and I have definitely missed seeing him on the show on a weekly basis, which reminds me– why have they never visited Zack all season long?! It’s not like he’s dead or something– he’s just been committed. ;- )

So all in all, I was very disappointed with the season finale and it seemed really disrespectful to me, too, especially to the diehard fans to be so misleading and dishonest about the content of the show with the false B&B hook-up.

And quite frankly, I’m not sure whether or not I’ll watch the show next season because I kinda feel like the writers and the network betrayed a basic trust. It may sound silly (malign me if you will) but to me, it just feels kinda sleazy — sleazy, underhanded and rather manipulative – all for the sole purpose of getting better ratings? (Yuck, I feel like I’ve been slimed!)

So I would greatly appreciate it if in the future the writers would just be more direct — it’s not like they even have the excuse of a writer’s strike to blame it on like the one that marked Moonlighting for death! Just let the B&B relationship develop and unfurl organically like the relationship between Pam & Jim on the Office. Just give me something substantial — a real relationship or as real as it can get by tv standards — with the endearing characters and character development that I’ve come to enjoy over the years.

P.S. And bring back Stephen Frye as “Gordon, Gordon.” He is a complete riot! He is totally adorable and extremely hysterical and I don’t care that he’s becoming a chef. I just love him as an actor and I still want him to make periodic appearances on the show. And I can’t believe that he wasn’t in the season finale — he would have made a great chef at “The Lab,” and I may even have been forced to cut the season finale some more slack.

Okay. Rant Over. And thanks to all who made it to the end of this post. I definitely feel better now. Surprisingly, venting makes everything better. ;-)

My comment goes to Ida and Jill,
I was completely sure It was Booth the one who struggles with his feelings for Brennan, I never saw it in the other way, for me the last scene from the 4×21 ep. was so clear, the way he looked at her….and now, I’m starting to get confuse too by what Brennan was writing in the finale…please, help

  20. By grecia

I personnally hate it, ’cause they promised other thing, they said “Yes, it’s baby-making sex” and I mean If it was a story (cause it’s not a dream not an hallucination) It can’t be real!
And I think it will be interesting to se Brennan frustated and falling in love even more whit this new Booth, because he doesn’t remember anything and I don’t think it’ll be fast to recover.
Memories are going to surface and might be he’ll think about his feelings for her (:

but conclussion, i don’t like the season finale
