The season 4 finale of Bones certainly wasn’t what I expected, how about you? I knew there would be a “twist” but even the twist is confusing, I guess. After reading through everyone’s comments so far, it seems that there’s not even a clear agreement among everyone about what the episode was about.
Was the entire thing a story that Brennan was writing to occupy herself while she waited for Booth to wake up? Was the whole thing a dream that Booth had while in the coma?
If it’s Brennan’s story, then it must mean that she realizes that she and Booth should be together. (And they were really cute together, weren’t they?)
If it’s Booth’s dream, wouldn’t he remember Brennan when he woke up? And if he did have amnesia from the brain surgery, how long will it last? Will his memory return, or will he have to make all new memories of who everyone is?
Since Hart Hanson and the cast all say that it “wasn’t a dream or hallucination,” to me, that means that it must have been the story Brennan was writing. Otherwise, it would be Booth’s dream. So technically, they were right, even if they were all very sneaky about it. ;-)
Did you enjoy the way all the characters were different? How did you like it that we got to see all the interns and the other cast members in the same episode…especially Zack?!
Here are my own personal thoughts. I know you may not agree, but that’s the beauty of things. We can all have different opinions and still love the same show. Personally, I hate alternate reality episodes and I don’t like “clip shows” either. Just give me real episodes. The others seem like cheater episodes to me…sorry, Hart!! You are terrific! This is just my own humble opinion.
But given that it was an alternate reality episode, I think Hart did a great job of writing it. And I loved Mötley Crüe!!! They were awesome.
I’m not totally upset about the B&B hookup being what it was (or wasn’t) since the discussion of the baby happened before any of that. So I expect that after Booth struggles to remember everyone and everything, the baby will still be a topic on the table. And we still have the sexual tension between the characters and the anticipation of them really getting together. So that’s not bad either. I just wasn’t such a fan of the alternate reality. I found it not as interesting as if the characters were themselves. But, again, that’s just me.
As for John Francis Daley’s band Dayplayer, aka Gormagon, was great and their MySpace site is here and you can clips of both of the songs they sang on the show here:
and here:
Now I want to hear what you think about the episode. And what do you expect to happen next season (Hey, let’s all be excited that there WILL BE a next season!!) Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Previous Post

This was not Brennan’s book – remember SWEETS was writing a book about Booth and Brennan! He even asked the other pschyiatrist for advice about it. This was an enactment of his story. Brennan would not have portrayed a lot of those elements in her book – she is too straight-laced.
ZACK
I think that the narration by hodgins was what Brenan was writing, but the entire episode was Booths dream. p.s. LOvED Never ending summer by ” Gormagon” (it was really by Dayplayer) &OMG!!!! Hated the LAST 3 WORDS!! WHO R U?????? REally????Next season starts in september!!! I cant wait!!
The season finale is just another sign of disrespect from the writers. It’s the kind of thing you see mid-season in some series, when the writers get boreor out of ideas and the whole cast starts singing a musical or speaking in verse. And no viewer enjoys it but they forgive because they really like the show ..normally. But NOT a season finale! You expect some talented writing that understands what the viewers like about the characters and show and give them something the viewers deserve for being loyal. You might as well do something as bizaare and ungrateful as creating a serial killer from your most implausible character (oops, they’ve done that already, although I’m glad to see they’re backpedaling on Zack).
SO IVE FIGURED OUT WHAT HART HANSON WAS DOING AND IT WAS ABSOLUTELY HANDS DOWN BRILLIANT. I love him, hes amazing. But k..he recently said “Booth’s problem isn’t remembering who Brennan is; it’s remembering which Brennan she is.” about booths little “mental set back” in the season finale…so the problem isn’t that booth lost his MEMORY its that he cant figure out if Bones is the bones he worked with, or the “Bren” he was DATING in his little dream. Which is such a great conflict and way to resolve their issues in season 5 because he’ll be seeing her in that way already and the season finale clearly showed that she too was realizing her feelings for him. I’m sure they’ll find a way to keep it from really happening and be suspenseful, but this gives me so much hope. All Booth needs to realize is that the Bones he works with can BE the Bren he is dating, I’m so excited for season 5!!!! <3333
Okay, I don’t know if anyone has ever taken this view before, but I don’t ever want to see them as romantically involved as they were in this episode again.
I hope that the creative talents behind this show take a lesson from Moonlighting, X-Files and a bunch of other shows that I can’t think of right now – the non-relationship is always more interesting than the relationship. Keep the romantic fans pining away for that magic moment FOREVER. Okay, maybe in the series finale at the end they can fall into each other’s arms – but only if its quickly followed by a final fade-out.
Actually, out of some loyalty to Boreanaz after Buffy/Angel I tuned in (let’s face it – he’ll aways have a job in TV as long as his looks hold out – not that I don’t like his acting, it’s just the reality of the business).
But what I found was a fairly typical formula cop show with some interesting characters. Not anything that would light up the screen. As I think back on the collective series I have an impression of the two of them driving together, making some jokes that she doesn’t get and some surprising moments when they were uncovering her family tree. (BTW Ryan O’Neal as a dangerous killer – yeah, right.) Even their “arch-nemesis” had a very unsatisfying and too quick end.
Stand out moments? The Xmas family reunion in the prison, the first appearance of Billy Gibbons, the second appearance of Billy Gibbons…
BUT the last two episodes were special, finally they’ve started to get enough guts to try something different with the format. In the old Perry Mason shows the killer was revealed 57 minutes into the show, like clockwork. Bones has a lot of that formula feel to it. The best shows are the ones where who-did-it is the least important part of the show.
They need more two-part extended stories, they need more suprise guest stars, they need a bad guy that can really challenge them and doesn’t go away, and I hate to say it but one of them has to DIE – I nominate ZACK in a death that looks like a routine prison slaying, but the team uncovers a dark wide-ranging conspiracy that threatens them and the Jeffersonian Institue. Perhaps they even get fired for pursuing the case and we pick them up several months later agreeing that something is wrong and they need to solve the crime without a lab full of high-tech equipment.
Be bold, be daring, take risks and stop trying to be an updated romantic version of Quincy. Sure they’ll miss sometimes and make a turkey, but at least it won’t be boring, which it is now too much of the time.
I love the show and hope that it continues. I find it very interesting in more ways than one. The Stories are great. They give veryone almost equal time and each has a purpose to the show. I’d love to see Booth & Bones get togetheralong with time spent together with Booth’s son, since he is a very important person in Booth’s life. Bones also needs to learn to loosen up when is comes to romance. Maybe someone should get her drunk so she could act more like a woman rather then a machine. She’s wound way to tight. Booth ought to show his feelings more also.
Whatever happens I don’t want the show to end any time soon. I watched the Bones Marathon and loved every show. I never miss a show. Can’t wait for the Fall series to start although I have no problem seeing reruns either.
Was very very disappointed with finale the first time i watched the ep. Sex woulda been betta if it was real…what can i say. xpectd it tho. HH is a tease. I mean he did say that he wouldnt pair them together unless it was absolutely necessary, so that i expected. He did say they’d be kissing for real sometime in s4, that never happened…] and the sex just didnt feel real given that it was an alternate reality ep although everyone says it was real.
The first time i watched it i hated it. But i rewatched it 24 laters later and that gave me enough time to get over the initial shock ending. B n B as a couple are so cute but i felt cheated because it didnt feel real – while the b n b characters in the alternate reality looked like b and b they werent the bones and booth i’m used to, the bones and booth characters i love. I mean for the entire episode booth refers to brennan as brennan rather than as ‘bones’ that just made the characters less real…so out of character; less booth and bones like… Even found myself wondering exactly when booth stopped calling her bones [rewatched the last 3 episodes, he doesnt use brennans name much in the 25th ep, but he calls her bones just before he goes into surgery] Cant believe how much i missed booth calling brennan bones. lol.
I’m really trying to think positive though; i’ve been trying to see the pregnancy, sex, kissing thing as a precognitive thing, things that might happen in s5, that just gives me something to look forward to. Also been looking at differences betw. the finale and the previous episodes, one thing i noticed was that there werent any opening credits. Why? To me that means either its a continuation of episode 25 or its a promo of things that might happen in season 5 – the sex, kissing, baby, marriage, zack will be released, the grave digger will return, brennan might date jared…etc. Also been looking at the differences between the sex scene and the morning after scene. The clocks are of course completely different, [both in size, shape, color and time] ones set in 24 hr time the other in 12 hr format, the sheets are different, brennans wearing a diamond ring [as well as the one by her mother] Also look at the night table – the size of them is different, one appears to be lower in size in the other its taller in size; the sand hour glass is in both frames, the big vase appears at 05.43, [it wasnt in the 4.47 to begin with] Brennans hair length appears diff. In the beginnin of finale its shorter, after that its longer. The opening commentary by jack is interesting. He says ‘Same life 1/2 n hr ago, a day ago a year ago..’ Leading me to believe that the sex is real but its set in the future.
I liked what was said about the contexts of what ‘who are you means’ it makes it a little more positive; on the other hand if it means that he does have amnesia then that just means b n b together is very much further off. [I read somewhere [on twitter i think] that ‘booth DOES NOT HAVE AMNESIA so i suppose the shocking question at the end ‘who are you?’ means what do you mean to me, who are you to me etc..etc.
A lot of you have wondered which one of the b’s is aware of their feelings, we could argue over and over and no one would ever agree on it; but my opinion is that booth is aware [Wyatt says 'yes one of them is aware of their feelings, struggles with it everyday] that just sounds like booth to me, and the way he looks at her when she gives him his hanky back, that just looks to me like he’s very much aware…brennan looks for a few secs and then just looks away.. although i do admit that that scene also makes me wonder whether brennan knows how she feels too, i just cant believe that she’s as clueless as she pretends to be. [i might have to rewatch the last 6 or 7 episodes of season 4 again and pay very close attention. lol] But i do know that by the end of episode 25 when she’s telling everyone about booth’s diagnosis that she does know how she feels; brennan has woken up and smelled the coffee and realises how much booth means to her. You can really see it at the part in ep 25 where she’s gone back to booth’s room pre-surgery – the part where she stops smiling and goes completely still for a few seconds while they’re looking at each other. Thats the part where i think she knows her feelings. [Whether she's going do anything about those feelings in s5 is up for debate]
I totally agreed with wyatt about his observation that b n b arent really opposites – in episode 10 i think it was [where they find out about sweets and daisy] and they’re joking about a relationship without common ground – i had to smile at that because they do have common ground – the one thing that binds them is their overall need for justice, to get justice for the people out there who have lost loved ones. etc. And the one other place they’re like peas in a pod is in the relationship/romantic aspect. They both run scared; brennan has this need to distance herself from a relationship that she feels might become too serious – therefore she chooses people that she’ll never be serious about [david, sully, mark and jason, to name a few] but for all booth’s talk about love, breaking the laws of physics etc. he isnt that much better than brennan is relationship wise; for all his talk he hasnt exactly chosen someone he can have a committed relationship with. His choices were various lawyers, rebecca, cam, perotta…women that he’ll never be serious about. You can see where i’m going, they’re not opposites when you really think about it, they’re two peas in a pod; they both run scared…
Interesting, I’ll have to read that. You don’t have the website, do you?
Coolschool, I also hope that you give the final epi another chance. And although I first thought HODGINS’ (not Hodges) monologues were a little cheesy, I really enjoyed them the second time around. As for Bones being out of character, this is the FIRST season I’ve gotten into the show. I loved it so much that I rented the other seasons and got through them all before the finale. Because I’ve seen them so recently in sequence, it’s easy for me to notice the change in Brennan, her evolution from one season to the next. She HAS changed from earlier shows, but in a way that is natural and makes sense. The particular episode you talked about (where she gets mad at the intern for wanting to pray), she only gets mad because of other things going on…don’t remember just what, but I think she was on edge. Anyone else remember that one and can be more specific?
Deborah, if this is right, so Brennan is the one who know… “Booth endeavors to come to grips with these unleashed emotions” and “Brennan insists that (…) the two of them focus their attention and energy on their main job” still struggles.. fantastic!
Has anyone else seen this yet? I just found it on Fox Fall ’09 page. Seems they BOTH had the dream — and it is Booth who is realizing his feelings for Bones –
Of course, that could all be hokum to lead us astray . . .
(from Fox webpage)
As Season Five of BONES begins, Booth and Brennan contend with the emotional fallout resulting from the sea-change in their relationship brought about by events at the end of Season Four. This includes Brennan’s request to have Booth father her child and the strange, profound, almost psychic link they shared during Booth’s coma, which left both of them wondering what thoughts and emotions the other is experiencing. While Booth endeavors to come to grips with these unleashed emotions, Brennan insists that, with the aid of her “squints” in the lab, the two of them focus their attention and energy on their main job – catching murderers that no one else can catch.
To CoolSchool,
That was pretty harsh. I mean, if you look at things from a different angle, you’ll see that what Hart Hanson did was actually VERY smart. Going slightly off track in the finale was really clever because it leaves us wanting more. Of course, it’s still Bones, and if you watch the finale again, you’ll really enjoy. I can’t say I loved the cliffhanger, but I didn’t resent it either because it’s meant to leave the audience in suspense and anticipation.
Please, don’t jump the gun and judge the finale so. It was EXTREMELY smart and very enjoyable if you see it differently. And the baby thing… Mr. Hanson is too clever to let THAT ruin the show.
I really hope you change your mind:-)
(In Comic Store Guy voice) Worst Bones evah!-What crap.
The finale was a disappointing finish to a very uneven season. If, as some of you speculate, the voiceover narration from Hodges was from a book Tempe was writing how did she become such a popular writer. That book was the worst kind of pulp sludge-hope it’s her rough draft.
Bones seemed so out of character this season. Can’t remember all the occasions but one that stands out is when Booth went off on the Moslem lab assistant about praying. Bones has always been outspoken but never mean like she was that time. And the whole I want a baby thing-dumb and not very believalble. When babies are added to a show I always hear the motorcycle engine revving up in the distance for the shark jump.
As for the whole rotating lab assistants wheel of fortune game-pick one and get on with it. Bad enough you send Zach away and then we had to put up with that all season. Hope it gets back on track next season or don’t call it Bones.
And Deborah is totally right Amanda. We all look at things from a differnet angles. No one can put a lock on our thoughts, right?
To Amanda Pina,
No problem, really, and of course Booth does know, but he just doesn’t struggle with it. You know? You’re right, for sure, because he realizes it clearly. It’s just that Brennan’s distorted view of a family causes it to be difficult for her.
So, what you see is definitely right, but it’s different when you look at it from Brennan’s angle.
But, of course, no matter what I or Deborah say, what you said is true: we really need to wait to know.
To Amanda,
You’re welcome! This is why I love sites like this – to see different perspectives and insights. Just what a good conversation should be!
To Melinda,
Now, I’m more confusing. Cause I always see Both as the one who knows, and never thought carefully about Brennan’s situation… it’s really a possiblity. You and Deborah showed me something more, thank you!
To stldenise –
I wondered the same thing about the 3 past “visions”, so I went back through the epi recaps to find it. 4:14 Hero in the Hold was the one where Booth saw a young soldier who had died while Booth was trying to save him. During the episode he convinces Booth that his death was not Booth’s fault.
The second reference isn’t to a girlfriend, but to hockey great Luc Robitaille. 4:13 Fire in the Ice is where Booth is playing hockey (feds vs fuzz) and gets knocked to the ice and has a concussion. He see Robitaille, who plays some one-on-one with him, and gives him advice. He actually tells Booth that he’s not his father, he protects the ones he cares about.
So, as Sweets would probably analyze — both of these past visions and also Stewie have served to put words to thoughts and feelings Booth has had – about his Army days, his abusive father and now about being a father himself (by having a baby with Bones).
Hope that helps!
Ug! The ep was finely crafted and it was interesting to watch, but not remotely what I wanted to see. I couldn’t catch it on TV, so I watched on Hulu, and almost turned it off when I saw that they were doing a “dream” ep. But, it’s better than what I feared – I was afraid they were using the brain surgery as a way to kill Booth off and break Bones’ heart. Networks have done things just as stupid, so don’t say the didn’t think of it.
By the way…Bones said in the prev ep that Brennen had seen 3 things… the cartoon baby, the ep where he had a ghost soldier helping him…and a girlfriend? What ep was that? I might have missed it.
To Amanda Pina,
Well, in the Princess and The Pear…. Don’t forget that Brennan must be convincing herself that she isn’t in love with Booth, which is why she acts like she doesn’t really know why he’s so protective of her. It could be just a mask she puts on in front of other people, including Booth. What she said doesn’t necessarily be true. But then, like you said, we’ll have to wait to know:-)
