Welcome to the Captain: 1.2 ‘Weekend at Saul’s’ Recap

Recap
Original Air Date: February 11, 2008

JOSH agrees to let HOPE practice on him for her exam the following Monday. When they get to her apartment, however, her brother BRAD is back from New Zealand for the weekend in order to propose to his girlfriend NAOMI. Consequently, he needs Hope to find somewhere else to stay for the next few days, and, of course, Josh volunteers his place.

After Josh gets MARTY to return to his own apartment although he’s broken up with CLAIRE — whom he put on his lease after just two weeks together — Hope moves in temporarily. The pair have a great first night, but the situation sours a bit when Hope flosses her teeth in front of Josh, indicating she’s a little too comfortable around him.

UNCLE SAUL and JESUS both warned Josh that staying with Hope in the same apartment, even for only a couple of days, would take the mystery and attraction out of their fledgling relationship and guarantee they’ll never be anything more than friends. Now Josh sees the busybodies were correct.

When CHARLENE turns down Uncle Saul’s invitation to a weekend date for the 406th weekend in a row, Saul offers Josh a solution: come with him in Charlene’s place and tell Hope he’s going away to the country with an unspecified friend. Jesus is jealous of this development because despite his very obvious hints that he would love to accompany Uncle Saul for a weekend at his getaway, the older man never even considers inviting him.

To Josh’s dismay, the weekend getaway turns out to be a second apartment that Uncle Saul rents on the eighth floor of The Captain, which he calls Shangri-Saul. The two pass the time doing boring stuff like putting together puzzles, reading, playing ping pong, and cooking lobster. Saul claims Josh is welcome to anything in the apartment he wants, except for the bottle of champagne in the fridge he bought in 1989 — that’s how long he’s been pursuing Charlene — and is saving for the day the actress finally agrees to a weekend date.

Hope calls Josh because she needs to stop by her school but just realized she doesn’t have a key to his apartment. As Uncle Saul tickles Josh to make Hope jealous over who he might be with, Josh tells her where to find a spare key. Moments later, they hear a crash from the parking lot, which has to be Hope. She told Josh their first night together that she’s a lousy driver, having had six car accidents in four months. Josh, of course, rushes down to see if she’s okay.

When Hope wonders how he managed to arrive on the scene so quickly when he told her he was in the country for the weekend, Josh admits he was only at Uncle Saul’s getaway apartment on the eighth floor. Hope is impressed, though, that Josh rushed down so fast, and when they’re in his apartment later, she asks for privacy in the bathroom. In other words, instead of just seeing him as a casual friend who she can do anything in front of, she wants to put a little mystery back into their relationship. Josh smiles as he closes the bathroom door.

MY TAKE: If I were a writer whose series pitch to a network had been rejected last pilot season, I’d be mightily pissed that a show like Welcome to the Captain managed to get on the air instead.
