Weeds gives viewers a history lesson on America’s favorite crop

In honor of their upcoming fifth season, the folks from Weeds have put together a brief illustrated history of pot for our edification. It starts in 2727 B.C., when China used cannabis for medicinal purposes, and runs through the present day. Among the highlights:

  • In 1797, George Washington’s primary crop at Mount Vernon was Mary Jane.
  • Pot wasn’t illegal nationwide until it was outlawed under federal law in 1937.
  • Today weed is America’s biggest cash crop, bringing in $36 billion a year.
