It’s kind of fun to speculate on what it’d be like to own a movie studio. I’m guessing you’d have to not be concerned about losing money.
Anyway, if you’ve got an extra $5.2 billion lying around, you could own MGM, which, according to Business Week, is what the current owners are hoping to net. The magazine reported Friday that the investment consortium currently controlling MGM had retained Goldman Sachs to solicit purchase offers.
More after the jump…
Many doubt the studio could fetch even $5 billion, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Sony has a 20% stake in MGM — investment banks and Comcast hold the balance of equity — and is considered a prime candidate to bid on the remaining interest in the Lion should a formal auction be launched.
Lionsgate is considered among other prospective suitors, as the studio has been bulking up its holdings over recent years.
What do you think? Shall we all go in together and make an offer?

Why would something like MGM whose assets are products that can and are being copyright violated at each and every corner of the globe especially in the homes and backyard factories of half the world in India and China be worth $5 billion? Nostalgia? well sure go for it.
American and British film companies dream a lot. There was a time when they held closely the outdated technology that went into films of that era, that made them kings which today are a millstone around their investment necks.
For MGM to find a suitor it has to be relevant. To put it all into perspective, several Chinese companies already have the complete Michael Jackson including his last photos alive being taken to hospital in an ambulance packaged for sale at a tenth fo what his record company can offer at a discount. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Entertainment and entertainers are over rated, over priced and easily created and copied today. They have little talent and technology to access them is cheap. its now the shoe in the other foot. What happened to the Delta Blues, Jazz and Folk like Guthrie? It is a sign of the decline of the US. A great meal is KFC. Great Music is Britney Spears and Madonna. I rest my case.
I’m opening up my own studio, size of the L.A. studios but I won’t tell you where just yet!
