Tony Wilson, the founder of the Factory Records label and Manchester music scene legend died earlier this month on August 10th.
Now a website has been set up to collect tributes and remembrances of the man who signed Joy Division and New Order.
On August 10th 2007 Anthony H Wilson died of a heart attack due to complications from cancer. He was only 57, and his funeral on August 20th was attended by a great many people.
Ever since then, tributes and dedications have been pouring in from fans, musicians and celebrities alike.
The new site which has been set up in his name already features contributions from the likes of New Order, Elbow’s Guy Garvey and U2 manager Paul McGuiness.
If you’re sitting there thinking you’ve never heard of the guy, I can guarantee he had some sort of influence on your musical tastes. If you’re even a part time fan of British music, you will have heard of Joy Division or New Order.
Tony Wilson also owned and ran the Hacienda nightclub in Manchester which was home to some great gigs in the 1980s.
Many people give Tony Wilson credit for virtually starting the Madchester scene, which then developed in to Brit Pop.
In 2002 a film called ‘24 Hour Party People‘ was released which told the story of the man, the music and story of the time. Steve Coogan played Tony Wilson.
