Defying Gravity: Rubicon
Air Date: August 23 at 10:00 on ABC
It’s a humbling moment for the crew of the spaceship, as each of them deals with a personal point of no return, while the Antares itself crosses a critical boundary when going back to Earth is no longer an option, and the home planet becomes just another twinkling light in a vast canopy of stars.
Last week’s episode made me a real fan of the show. Still not loving so many flashbacks, but I thought the episode was well plotted and I was surprised to find that the cause of all their problems was a wrench thrown into the works and not the work of an alien being.
The one problem with the thing in the pod is that the mystery is reaching a point where no reveal will be interesting enough to live up to the promise. Surely we won’t be handed a rubber-suited monster – so what then? A disembodied intelligence? Or an artificial one? Could an A.I. be running the show? Something is frightening the heck out of the people back at Mission Control, I’m thinking it’s a computer with the ability to black out an entire planet if it doesn’t get its way.
What are your thoughts on the thing in the pod?

I really want to know the song that is playing at the end!! does anyone know?
Hey Cynthia. Nice reading your thoughtful comments. I kind of like the flashbacks’ premise, that something is inspiring lots of soul-searching out there. But that leads me to think the Intelligence isn’t so Artificial at all. Instead of Hal, how about The lifeforce — ahem, to borrow a concept — call it the collective unconsciousness, groping toward self-awareness? Wouldn’t it target our heroes defying gravity who dare to go where no others, etc.? That would be a pretty neat development for mankind — though I’d worry crazies from every religion might froth and bite at the gall of a plotline that suggested we grow into the God we deserve — then again, what a good bump in the ratings!
