I fell in love with The Ting Tings as soon as their debut album, We Started Nothing, was released in 2008. So I’m ecstatic to hear they’re currently beavering away on their second record, due out later this year. However, I’m not so sure about the name.

We Started Nothing is a gem of an album. It was a breath of fresh air and contained more original ideas than a whole season of The X Factor. Which isn’t too hard, granted.
The Ting Tings, made up of Katie White and Jules De Martino, revealed in July that they were heading for Berlin to write and record their second album. And they appear to have done exactly that.
The second album now has a name, with De Martino revealing to NME it is to be called Kunst. Seriously, Kunst? Why?
“Just round the corner to our studio there’s a massage parlor, it’s called Massage Kunst. It’s Massage Art, basically ["kunst" is German for "art"]. We took a picture of that and sent it to our label, saying this is the title of the album. They went berserk.”
Ah, so that explains it. But it doesn’t make it any better, or easier to say. I’m assuming the record label eventually gave the OK but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the name change before release, currently scheduled for late 2010.
De Martino also hinted at how the new album may sound, saying:
“We listened back to some of the demos and we thought, hold on a minute, this is sounding too much like we’re rocking out live. We bought a couple of old weird synths in New York and smuggled them in our suitcases back to Berlin and they started to come strong on the music.”
To be honest, The Ting Tings can call the new album anything they want; so long as the music is as fresh and catchy as that on We Started Nothing I’ll still rush out and buy it on day one. And anyone who doesn’t is a right kunst in my opinion.
