The X Factor 2008 – The Witch Is Dead!

The X Factor 2008 Diana Vickers

I’m a very pleased man this morning, because The X Factor witch is dead! Yes, Diana Vickers, the least talented singer in the competition finally got voted off on Saturday’s show, and took her strange claw hand and weird vocal hiccups with her. I’m not religious but thank God for that.

I’ve never liked Diana, from the first audition, through the boot camp, and onto the live finals. I just didn’t get what the fuss was about. She cannot sing, and on top of that, she adds these little hiccups to the end of each line of a song. That’s not to mention the presence of her left hand claw up by her face every week.

To be fair to her, Diana did perform one song quite well on Saturday, not completely ruining Avril Lavigne’s Girlfriend. But she then massacred Dido’s White Flag and ensured herself fourth place in the competition. She seemed to know she was going, making references to this being her last show, and how much she’d enjoyed it.

Her leaving unfortunately meant she performed again, which must have been tough after finding out the public hate you. She therefore ruined the song even more, before crying into the arms of her alleged new boyfriend Eoghan Quigg. The other surviving acts also put on their sad faces to win a few votes next week.

So we come to the final next week, with three acts vying for victory. The one remaining group, JLS, mentored by Louis Walsh, Eoghan Quigg, the young boy mentored by Simon Cowell, and Alexandra Burke, the only talented one left in the contest, mentored by Cheryl Cole. The ever-useless Dannii Minogue has no acts left, and will hopefully have no job either when this series ends.

I don’t know how JLS got to the final. Actually I do, they’re four mildly attractive young men who charm their way through the contest every week, appealing to young girls and middle-aged women equally. But men hate them, and I can’t stand them because they can’t sing, dance, or do anything other than stand in a line looking good.

Eoghan Quigg probably deserves his place in the final but I still don’t like him. I can see he has talent, and he’s young enough that the talent he does possess could be nurtured for years to come. Although I’m not sure if Simon Cowell is the right man to do that… just look at what he’s turned Leon Jackson in to.

And last but definitely not least is Alexandra Burke. She’s beautiful, talented, and the closest thing we’ve had to a diva since, well, Leona Lewis. And that’s the big problem, she’s just too similar to Leona. It might cost her the competition, even though she is by far the best performer left in.

I think the comments about Diana were unkind, I feel she does have a future in pop music as she has good stage presence and an interesting voice. Let’s not forget she is only 17. However, her vocals on white flag were a bit nasal and I feel in some songs her voice sounded affected since her laryngitis. The first song she did on the semi final was brilliant though and suited her 100%! Diana was a great contender and I wouldn’t have liked to have seen her go any lower than 4th place, I was hoping for 3rd place for her and at one time, before her throat problems I thought she could win it. In the end though I wanted JLS to win but Alexandra is a very worthy winner and was strong from the first live show, just hope she doesn’t get compared to Leona too much. This year I would say 8 acts out of 12 stood a good chance to get to the final and this was the best year so far! Great show!!
