The Who Playing Super Bowl XLIV – Some Aren’t Happy

The biggest event in American sports is the annual Super Bowl, with the two top football teams of the year competing for the ultimate prize. Thousands attend, and millions more watch on TV. And it isn’t just about the game, with the half-time show now a big part of the event.

Pete Townshend The Who

Last year’s Super Bowl show was punctuated by an electrifying set from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. This year, for Super Bowl XLIV (44), The Who have been booked to perform. From an American legend to British legends.

While The Who are clearly a great booking, with Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, and company still able to belt out the hits, some people aren’t very happy with the band’s appearance on the bill.

According to The Sun Sentinel, a couple of child abuse groups in the States are protesting The Who playing the Super Bowl halftime show because of Pete Townshend’s run-in with the law a few years ago.

Townshend was arrested in 2003 for allegedly accessing child pornography on the Internet. Townshend was cautioned and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years after claiming he only visited the Web site as research for an upcoming book.

While child sex offenses are indefensible, this appears to have been a one-off with mitigating circumstances. And it was so long ago that the alleged crime has been expunged from Townshend’s record now. So, why the fuss?

‘Run in with the law?’ You’re kidding right? He was registered sex offender for five years. That my friend disqualifies anyone from getting a job even sweeping the floor at the NFL. A sex offender for confessing checking out and paying for child rape online is beyond the realm of any understanding. You, or anybody has no right to makes excuses for him just because he’s a celebrity.
Townshend was kiddie porn registered sex offender. In my mind he always will be.
