The Ting Tings have been a revelation this year, seemingly coming from nowhere to find fame and success on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as almost everywhere else in the world. This is their new single, Be The One, the fourth song to be released from their début album, We Started Nothing.
This song has a tough act to follow. While Great DJ didn’t do much, Shut Up and Let Me Go, and That’s Not My Name were absolutely huge. Thankfully for us Ting Tings fans, and unfortunately for those of you who hate them, Be The One is another song which successfully straddles the dance/indie/alternative genres.
Strangely though, it’s a love song, of sorts. It all makes for an enticing mix that drags you kicking and screaming in to liking the song, even if you were determined not to on first listen. Be The One music video and review after the cut.
Be The One is slightly more subtle than the singles that have gone before. But, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As The Ting Tings evolve, the songs are going to be less reliant on addictive riffs and more reliant on the lyrics coupled with lead singer Katie White’s voice. Which I love by the way.
The video is a weird one but works in the main. There’s not too much to understand about it apart from it showing two people wandering through life (shown by the honking great video screens following White and De Martino) until they come together as one.
I love the bit where White’s potential suitor falls under the big screen and then appears on it. The ending lets it down though, with the director clearly not knowing what to do. I know, let’s give White a guitar and drive off in to the sunset. Lame.
