"The Thing": A Prequel Is Coming… Finally

Fans of John Carpenter’s The Thing have been waiting a long, long time for some news on a continuation of the story. Did Kurt Russell and that other guy make it as they stared each other down in the snow that night at the end of the movie, and which one, if either, was infected by “the thing”?

That’s what we may never know. What we do know is that Marc Abraham, producer of the movie, just talked to George at Latin Review and revealed he has an update in the works. If you never saw the 1982 film, the some spoilers follow, as well as the details on the update.

He reveals the new film is to be a prequel, and will follow the events that lead up to the American research team’s run-in with the alien shape-shifting creature.

The original movie is directed by John Carpenter, and stars Kurt Russell. Interestingly, Russell’s character is that of the helicopter pilot, and yet, his character and the other, Childs (portrayed by Keith David) are the lone survivors in the film.

In the final scene, the desolation of being trapped there in the arctic, and the distrust that each men share strikes a strong chord with viewers..of an awesome seriousness. It is hoped the prequel brings similar tones. I have always felt this film was made before its time.
