The New Adventures of Old Christine: 3.4 ‘Traffic’ Recap

Recap
Original Air Date: February 25, 2008

CHRISTINE is so untogether. First she’s forced to bring RITCHIE along on a dinner date with DANIEL HARRIS when his soccer practice runs late, and then she can’t make out with Daniel later at her house because RICHARD, MATTHEW, and NEW CHRISTINE are over to have belated birthday drinks in honor of BARB.

Fortunately, everyone has their little PDAs and date books, and they coordinate together to make sure Christine will be available the Sunday after next so she can attend a reception for new faculty at Daniel’s new school. Christine and Daniel also set up a date for the coming Thursday, but Christine is so tired, she falls asleep on the couch, even after Daniel is nice enough to cancel the plans he made to stay at home with her so she won’t get overtaxed.

The Sunday of Daniel’s reception arrives, and Christine is determined not to mess up this date, especially considering that her last three dates with Daniel have all been ruined because of her commitments or physical state. Christine, Richard, and Matthew are all certain Ritchie’s team is going to lose, and everyone assumes they’ll be back home by noon. (Un)fortunately, Ritchie’s team does win — three games in a row and all in overtime. As a result, it’s dark outside by the time the group heads home.

To make matters worse, Christine, Richard, New Christine, Ritchie, and Matthew get stuck in traffic. With just twenty minutes left before Daniel’s reception starts and the teacher not answering his cellphone, Christine is forced to call Barb to go to the event and keep him company until she arrives. Since she also doesn’t have time to go home first to change her clothes and do her hair, Christine then convinces New Christine, who’s wearing a dress ensemble, to swap clothes with her.

Barb and Daniel hit it off like oil and water at the school function. As a result, by the time Christine arrives, not only is the event almost over, but the tension between her best friend and boyfriend is extremely thick. Back at Christine’s house afterwards, the inevitable happens.

A frustrated Daniel tells Christine what they both already know — while he has plenty of free time as a single person without kids, she has almost no free time as a single mother and business owner. They’ve only been on six dates in their three-month relationship, and it doesn’t look like they’ll ever have the chance to do anything spontaneously. That leaves no choice but for them to break up, although Daniel is okay with Christine telling people in the future that she dumped him.
