The Game: 2.14 ‘White Men Can’t Jump, But They’re Definitely Packing’ Recap

Recap
Original Air Date: April 6, 2008

Heads-Up: This episode is 100% Melanie free.

While out drinking at a club with RICK FOX (playing himself) and a few men, two white and one Asian, from her new job at Irv Smif Management, TASHA gets into a discussion about stereotypes involving different kinds of men and the size of their penis. She proclaims to one of her colleagues, a white man named Lev, that unless he can prove they’re not true, she’s sticking with the stereotypes. So, he flashes her and the stereotypes go “poof!”

The next morning, when all of the booze has left their system, Lev stops by Tasha’s office to apologize for doing anything that might have made her uncomfortable. Apparently, he’s new like her, and both agree they feel under pressure to fit in. Tasha, nursing a huge hangover, genuinely seems to not be offended by what happened the previous night.

At the San Diego Sabers clubhouse, JASON anoints DERWIN temporary captain so he can step it up for the ritual everyone’s looking forward to now that it’s playoff time. Unfortunately, the other players prefer MALIK‘s suggestion to get matching tattoos over Derwin’s suggestion that they ride every roller coaster at Six Flags repeatedly and then eat funnel cakes. Derwin is opposed to Malik’s idea because “tattoos hurt” and they aren’t sanitary, but the other players are all for it because matching tattoos will show their commitment.

Jason and his wife KELLY attend a marriage therapy session with a DR. PARKER next, and Kelly can’t get a word in edgewise while Jason repeatedly interrupts her and talks over her. The player ultimately tries to end the session early after he states it’s clear he and his wife aren’t having communication problems.

Since there’s still time left and the doctor doesn’t pro-rate charges, the couple sticks around while Kelly continues to look upset over how ineffective the session has been. It’s then that the therapist reveals he’s a Sabers super fan, and instead of staying focused on counseling, he starts raving about his past Sabers experiences.

That’s probably why when Tasha tells Kelly about what happened with Lev later, Kelly insists Tasha has been socially raped and must not let the flashing incident go so easily. Tasha just laughs and tells Kelly to bring her a donut.

The team tattoo party reveals that the guys are just pulling one over on Derwin, who’s been pretty full of himself lately. After they all get fake tattoos, they sit around and watch while Derwin has a large real one put on his lower left back-side. Jason films the whole thing, including the reveal when the guys show Derwin how their own “tattoos” rub off.

Derwin is not amused, however. He considers tattoos a desecration of the body that goes against his religion and his grandmother’s teachings. In fact, when he told her what he was about to do, he explained his actions by saying it would be for his brothers on the team, who would never hurt him. The team members joke around about Derwin’s outburst at first, but they later all get matching permanent tattoos, and Jason calls his grandmother to apologize.

Back at Irv Smif Management, Lev cuts Tasha down during a meeting when the managers discuss hypothetical client strategies. Tasha immediately retaliates by bringing up the flashing incident, which boss Irv claims not to know about, although it’s clear Lev, who’s married to Irv’s sister, told him. Irv fires Lev on the spot, leaving Tasha feeling guilty while Rick Fox, Irv, and the Asian manager head out for afternoon drinks.

At the next therapy session, Jason and Dr. Parker carry on like best buds about Jason’s acting gig on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Kelly finally gets her thoughts in when she blurts out that she married Jason for his money. The reason she puts up with his crap is because she felt guilty about it afterwards, especially since she loves him now. Jason doesn’t seem to care, though, and he leaves the office angry.

Things aren’t going well for Tasha at ISM either. Now that Lev has been fired because she spoke up, all of the men in the office are talking about her behind her back and avoiding her. Tasha has an outburst of her own in front of everybody, basically giving a sermon about how they all have to let each other be themselves and how she doesn’t hate men.

Kelly starts up a round of applause afterwards. Yet, when everyone walks away, the Asian manager calls Irv aside and tells him he’s taking affirmative action too far. Irv responds that they’ll sign Malik and dump Tasha in six months, so just call Lev and tell him he’s back.
