The Foo Fighters...Not McCainiacs

3rd Annual

The Foo Fighters issued a statment early yesterday about John McCain’s use of the song “My Hero” and their discontent for his use of it. This isn’t the first time that this has become an issue. I heard about something similar to this awhile back and my wife and I got into it about it. My argument wasn’t so much that the politician was using it without permission but that some artists don’t want themselves or songs associated with politicians and they have the right to ask them…or TELL them not to use it. The Foo Fighters said:

“It’s frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property,”

“The saddest thing about this is that ‘My Hero’ was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song. We hope that the McCain campaign will do the right thing and stop using our song–and start asking artists’ permission in general!”

This isn’t the first time the McCain party has been asked not to use a bands song. Van Halen voiced their concern when McCain’s campaign used “Right Now“, Sammy said he didn’t care either way. Heart, Jackson Browne and John Mellencamp have all also asked the McCain campaign to stop using their songs.

    This begs one question:

How hard is it to ask permission first?

Maybe they did get permission from the label that also owns the rights, but I think they should have to get exclusive permission from the band.

Yeah, I understand that the label technically owns the song, but still, it’s Grohl’s work, he’s the one who wrote it. It just frustrates me to no end that it seems like musicians/artists have so little say over what becomes of their work.
