The Farrelly brothers get their Stooges – Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro?

sean_penn_interpreter This seems like the wackiest casting ever. Sean Penn as Larry Fine, Benicio Del Toro as Moe Howard, and Jim Carrey as Curly Howard?

Ok, I can see funny-guy Carrey as Curly, but the other two? I’m guessing the Farrelly brothers’ new version of "The Three Stooges" will zero in on the trio’s more dramatic side of their lives.

Still, the Variety story says the film isn’t a biopic, but rather a "comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts."

It’s been a while in the making, too. Peter and Bobby Farrelly have been trying to get the movie in motion for more than a decade, and through three studios – first Columbia, then Warner Bros., and now with MGM. Production is scheduled to begin in 2010.

Does this seem like weird casting, or do you think Penn and Del Toro can pull it off?

Can’t wait! I just hope the Farrelly bros (even though a fan) don’t butcher the 3 stooges classic

I love the 3 Stooges, but with Sean Penn in this movie, you can count me out!
