The Edge: New U2 Album “Something Really Special”

I’m really not a fan of U2, but even I, who really wasn’t expecting much, was disappointed by their last album, No Line On The Horizon. It may as well have been named No Good Songs On The Album. And now they’re hard (a relative term) at work on their next LP.

U2 were, at one time, the best rock band in the world. But they lost it. The hype got to them, with Bono in particular thinking he’s something special, some Jesus-like figure sent to Earth in order to do good deeds. And release increasingly sucky music.

It’s as though the band now doesn’t care what dross it releases. The music is now secondary to saving the world, and the fans will buy any old crap anyway (or maybe not), so why bother making an effort?

Which is why I haven’t got high hopes for the next album.

The Edge told EW.com:

“We are working on a lot of new songs. Some of them are really, really happy. We’re convinced that we have something really special.”

“We are experimenting with a lot of different arrangements, and electronic is one of the things we are playing with. But there are other songs that are very traditional, almost folk. In some ways, that’s the thing we haven’t figured out yet, is where this album is going to end up.”

Oh God. I can see where this is heading. U2 will either release a double album, one half of which will be folksy and traditional, the other being experimental and electronic, or they’ll end up releasing another mishmash of terrible vocals and half-finished songs just like No Line On The Horizon. Which sounds like a work in progress to me.

I cannot wait… to completely destroy it in my review.
