The cutting room: Bob Greenblatt trims Dexter for CBS

Dexter-Season-1-promo-picLos Angeles Times reporter Lynn Smith got access to Showtime programming VP Bob Greenblatt while he was editing Season 1 of Dexter for its Feb. 17 premiere on CBS. The resulting story is even more revealing than the edited clips the network has released to the media.

Greenblatt, a former producer, handled the cuts personally because of the writers strike. Smith’s story — which will run in print on Sunday but is already up online — takes you inside the editing suite with Greenblatt. “The things that are unconventional about it are still 100% there,” he says of the CBS version.

Smith’s take: The severed head still bounces on the freeway and the mutilated corpse is still neatly laid out by the motel. But profanity, foreplay and genitals secured with plastic wrap? Cut, cut and blurred, even though you can’t see anything anyway.

For those of you who’ve watched Season 2 and want a refresher on the first season for the inevitable watercooler convosĀ  following its CBS debut, I’ve posted a super-quick video recap after the jump.

Spoiler alert: Dexter newbies, don’t watch unless you wanna know the major plot points for Season 1.
